Homecare – Sherry Picker

In a homecare situation you need to check you long term care policy for daily benefits, elimination period to determine your out of pocket expense.  In many cases, especially private arrangements, you become an employer and have to take out  taxes, etc.  The advantage of an agency is that you pay them a fee and they cover paying the aide.  Additionally they are responsible for substitutes, etc. “Magic is in the Match”  Sherry’s role is to determine with you what you need and match the right person to the job. She noted that you can sign up with her in advance of needing an aide and then it is quicker when you need someone.

Independent and Assisted Living

Candy and Becky serve as advisors to individuals and their families seeking information on these facilities. They help with every step along the way including finding the right community, arranging and accompanying clients on tours of senior living communities , referring to senior move managers, and of course, talking to family members who are involved in the decision.  (Note from Gloria, make sure you try a meal when looking at a facility.)  Candy added that they  also recommend that you ask to talk to residents who live at the community and possibly family members too.

Independent Living- Candy

These communities are for people who are able to function independently for the most part. They’re appropriate for people who need a little help, since various services can be accessed on site. At many of these communities you can also bring a private duty aide for a few hours each day. Independent Living apartments range in size from studios to 2-bedrooms, and all of them have a kitchen.  Two or three meals are provided in the community dining room so you won’t be doing major cooking. Activities and transportation are provided, and the goal is to help people have a routine and sense of purpose. These are usually rentals but can be CCRC (Continuing Care Community) where  you buy in to various levels on a contract arrangement  (you may or may not get money back)

Assisted Living – Becky

Fee is rental plus care costs which are assumed to need more care than Independent.  Residents are checked on more frequently (every 2 hours) but a lot is similar as far as activities, etc.  Usually 3 meals/day and laundry is provided.  Also available are group homes for assisted living.  Typically 6 residents with two aides. To apply for Long Term Care Medicaid or VA Aide and Attendance, it’s important to talk to an Eldercare attorney and not a general attorney.

Contact Candy or Becky for more information on an assisted living that specializes in Parkinson’s opening soon in Delray Beach.
